Amar a morir
A young man aggressively seeks an escape from his restrictive life -- and finds one in a unique girlfriend -- in this tense romantic thriller from Mexico. As the wealthy, handsome, and intelligent heir to Vizcaino, Inc. -- a banking conglomerate launched by his high-rolling father Ricardo (Sergio Jurado) -- Alejandro Vizcaino (Jose Maria de Tavira) appears to have everything he could want or need. But in truth, Ricardo is thoroughly corrupt and rotten, and controls every single aspect of Alejandro's life and world -- from how he dresses, to what he eats, to who he will marry. Alejandro grows so suffocated from this treatment, and so desperate, that his need to escape propels him into a dangerous drag racing feat, and causes an extreme accident. Shaken but physically unharmed, Alejandro rejects his life in one sudden and swift maneuver by fleeing town. He ends up in an impoverished beachside community, popular among locals for its surfing, and his eyes soon fall on Rosa (Martina Garcia), the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on. By Ricardo's standards, Rosa falls well below Alejandro's social class, but Alejandro doesn't care; he seeks Rosa out and the two fall madly in love with one another. Unfortunately, Rosa lives under the oppressive thumb of a local gangster, El Tigre (Alberto Estrella), which means that Alejandro will be putting his life on the line if he attempts to abscond with his new paramour. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
EVANGELION 1.0: YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE is the first installment in a film series known as the Rebuild of Evangelion that reinterprets the story first told in the critically acclaimed anime series NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. Covering the material from the first six episodes of the series, this film sets the stage when 14-year-old Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3. His mother dead and his father painfully distant, Shinji is lonely, quiet, and wracked with torturous self-doubt. But Shinji's arrival in the city signifies his chance to prove himself as one of three teenagers chosen to pilot a series of technologically unprecedented robots called Evas, mysterious hybrids of man, spirit, and machine created to fight the unrelenting monsters known as Angels that continue to attack Earth, one at a time. Thrown into battle before he's had so much as a day of training, Shinji's desperate need for his father's approval isn't helped by the pressure of the world's survival on his shoulders, or the difficult time he has living amongst the other pilots, who very strangely, have suffered the same losses that he has. EVANGELION 1.0: YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE directly follows the plot of the original series in some ways, but drastically diverges in others, focusing even more on the cryptic and symbolic nature of the story's religious themes. Serbis
Filipino director Brillante Mendoza brings a frank, gritty immediacy to SERBIS, a multi-character, day-in-the-life portrait of a family-run movie house in the Philippines. Only this isn't your typical movie house. It's actually a downtrodden venue that shows graphic double features and allows the clientele to make their own sexual connections in the dark shadows. Today is a very important day, for Nanay Flor, the family matriarch, is going to discover if she won a years-in-the-making bigamy case against her husband. Meanwhile, her children are involved in dramatic situations of their own. Alan has just learned troubling news about his girlfriend, and Nayda is married but attracted to her cousin Ronald. As the day develops and the verdict comes down, the Pinedas struggle to focus on the daily tasks associated with the theater, even as their own personal conflicts threaten to overwhelm them.Shot on video, SERBIS recalls films from the Dogme 95 movement. Mendoza and screenwriter Armando Lao have clearly constructed these dramatic situations, yet they are shot on consumer video with such energy that the film often feels like a documentary. Mendoza pulls no punches, showing multiple scenes of behind-the-scenes sexuality that are even more graphic than the X-rated behavior unfolding on the cavernous theater's silver screen. SERBIS provides a realistic, unflinching glimpse into this hyper-sexualized world. (1 hr. 33 min.)

The Wedding Song
Two young women find that their differences bring them closer during a difficult time in this drama from writer-director Karin Albou. Nour (Olympe Borval) and Myriam (Lizzie Brochere) grew up in the same neighborhood in Tunis, and as they've grown into adulthood they've stayed close friends, even though Nour is a Muslim and Myriam is Jewish. It's 1942, and Tunis is under occupation by Axis forces, which has made life difficult for both women: the German authorities have prevented Khaled (Najib Oudghiri), Nour's fiancee, from getting a job, forcing them to postpone their wedding, while Myriam's family must pay exorbitant fines for being Jewish, which may lead her into a marriage of convenience to a wealthy physician (Simon Abkarian) many years her senior. While Myriam sees no way out of her desperate situation, Nour finds that the Nazi propaganda circulated throughout the community is piquing her worst suspicions about Jewish stereotypes. But as Nour and Myriam sink deeper into their personal crises, they begin to understand how badly they need one another's support. THE WEDDING SONG (aka LE CHANT DES MARIEES) was an official selection at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival. (1 hr. 40 min.)
